Dave, this is a pic of a female Southern Right Whale. She is on her back, exposing a white belly and large flipper. When disinterested in a male, the female will turn on her back, only to be rocked back on to her front, by the male. This game can go on for hours, with up to five males vying for her attention. If the first male does get lucky, it is more than likely his sperm will get pushed out by another Whale's ejaculation and so on. In this situation, being last brings results.We watched this mating pair for nearly an hour. The female would rush towards our boat, in order to hide behind it. It meant for some very close encounters and was very exciting. The high-lite of last week.
